Scholarships and Awards

There are a variety of scholarships and awards to honor the efforts of hard working Family Medicine residents. MAFP looks to recognize those deserving individuals and we welcome nominations throughout the year. Take a look at the scholarships and awards available for residents through both the MAFP and the AAFP. This information is updated regularly so please check back for new opportunities.

 

Resident Delegate/Alternate Delegate National Conference Scholarships

Annually the MAFP Foundation selects two residents—a Delegate and an Alternate Delegate—to represent Michigan at the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in Kansas City, Missouri. Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to provide funding assistance to cover the resident's expenses, including travel to and from the conference, accommodations and meals.

The deadline to apply for consideration as a 2016 Delegate/Alternate Delegate is April 1, 2016. The 2016 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students will take place July 28-30.

Poster Presentation Awards

Poster Presentation Awards at the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX)

Poster presentations are presented at the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX) by medical students and residents and evaluated for quality of research design, value, and relevance to family physicians. Winners are selected by the Subcommittee on FMX Learning. Cash awards are given to the first- and second-place winners. First-place, second-place, and honorable mention winners (in resident and medical student categories) receive ribbons and certificates.


Poster Presentation Awards at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

The AAFP's National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students annual poster presentation competition is one of the largest forums for residents and students to display their research and special projects. One resident and one student will be recognized with first-place ribbons and earn a trip to the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX) in Orlando to present their posters. Deadline to apply is April 1.

AAFP National Conference Scholarships

Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute

Enhance your leadership skills and earn a scholarship to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students through the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute. This year-long leadership development program focuses on ensuring the future of the Family Medicine specialty by increasing the number of future Family Medicine leaders and providing training for this important role. A total of 30 participants are selected through a competitive application process. Family Medicine residents in their first, second, or third year when the program begins are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply for the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute is March 1.

Minority Scholarships Program for Residents and Medical Students

AAFP student and resident minority members who are interested in pursuing a career in Family Medicine will each receive a $600 scholarship to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference. Deadline to apply is May 1.

Community Outreach Awards

AAFP student and resident members will receive a $600 scholarship to attend the National Conference for their key leadership role in a community service or advocacy project. The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference. Deadline to apply is May 1.

Residency Program Grants

Senior Immunization Grant Awards

Because commitment to immunization deserves recognition, the AAFP Foundation’s Senior Immunization Grant Awards Program recognizes Family Medicine residency programs for identifying and developing solutions to overcome barriers to immunizations and promotes sharing of best practices. The 2016-2017 awards will provide $11,200 in support to Family Medicine residency programs to enhance resident's quality improvement and/or community health training, while improving the rates of influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations in patients age 65 and older during the 2016-2017 flu season (September 2016 through March 2017). Support for the 2016-2017 Senior Immunization Grant Awards is provided by Pfizer Inc. The deadline to apply is April 18.

Resident Awards

Michigan Family Medicine Resident of the Year

The Michigan Family Medicine Resident of the Year award is an annual award of the MAFP that recognizes a Family Medicine resident (PGY-1, PGY-2 or PGY-3) who exhibits qualities of exemplary patient care, demonstrates leadership amongst his or her colleagues, displays a commitment to the community at large, and has dedicated himself /herself to the specialty of Family Medicine through involvement in the MAFP and AAFP, service to his/her residency program, and/or other Family Medicine organizations. Deadline to apply or make a nomination is March 1.

AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education

This award recognizes outstanding Family Medicine residents for their leadership, civic involvement, exemplary patient care and aptitude for and interest in Family Medicine. Deadline to apply is March 14.
