Scholarships and Awards

There are a variety of scholarships and awards to honor the efforts of medical students interested in pursuing a career in Family Medicine. MAFP looks to recognize these deserving individuals and we welcome nominations throughout the year. Take a look at the scholarships and awards available for medical students through both the MAFP and the AAFP. This information is updated regularly, so please check back for new opportunities.

 

Student Delegate/Alternate Delegate National Conference Scholarship

Annually, the MAFP Foundation selects two students—a Delegate and an Alternate Delegate—to represent Michigan at the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in Kansas City, Missouri. Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to provide funding assistance to cover the student's expenses, including travel to and from the conference, accommodations and meals.

The deadline to apply for consideration as a 2016 Delegate/Alternate Delegate is April 1, 2016. The 2016 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students will take place July 28-30.

Poster Presentation Awards

Poster Presentation Awards at the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX)

Poster presentations are presented at the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX) by medical students and residents and evaluated for quality of research design, value, and relevance to family physicians. Winners are selected by the Subcommittee on FMX Learning. Cash awards are given to the first- and second-place winners. First-place, second-place, and honorable mention winners (in resident and medical student categories) receive ribbons and certificates.


Poster Presentation Awards at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

The AAFP's National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students annual poster presentation competition is one of the largest forums for residents and students to display their research and special projects. One resident and one student will be recognized with first-place ribbons and earn a trip to the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX) in Orlando to present their posters. Deadline to apply is April 1.

AAFP National Conference Scholarships

Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute

Enhance your leadership skills and earn a scholarship to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students through the Family medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute. This year-long leadership development program focuses on ensuring the future of the Family Medicine specialty by increasing the number of future Family Medicine leaders and providing training for this important role. A total of 30 participants are selected through a competitive application process. Medical students in their second, third, and fourth year when the program begins are eligible to apply. The deadline to apply for the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute is March 1, 2016.

Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Leadership Award

AAFP student members will receive a $600 scholarship to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students for outstanding contributions to their FMIGs, medical schools, and Family Medicine. The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging and meals) to attend National Conference. Deadline to apply is May 1.

Minority Scholarships Program for Residents and Medical Students

AAFP student and resident minority members who are interested in pursuing a career in Family Medicine will each receive a $600 scholarship to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. The $600 scholarship is intended to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses (registration, travel, lodging, meals) to attend National Conference. Deadline to apply is May 1.

Community Outreach Awards

AAFP student and resident members will receive a $600 scholarship to attend the National Conference for their key leadership role in a community service or advocacy project.
