On Wednesday, January 29, the Michigan Senate Appropriations Committee passed two bills – SB 648 and SB 649 – that would make important and necessary policy changes our state’s loan repayment program. The program, which grants forgiveness for primary care providers who agree to practice in medically underserved communities, is a vital tool for our state to recruit primary care physicians and other allied health professionals to go into these areas.

The bills, which passed unanimously and now await action on the Senate floor, represent a critical step forward for primary care and specifically Family Medicine; and will help raise awareness in the legislature around the important link between a robust primary care-based system and a healthy population.

Let’s keep the momentum going!
